The Diverse Economic Policies of US Republican Party

Government GrantsThe economic policies play an important role in Republican politics. Economics is one area that always features prominently on any party’s set of ideologies. This is because a lot depends on it and introduction of effective economic policies can work wonders for any political party. The same theory applies to the Republican Party. One of the theories of economy that they give considerable importance to is supply-side economics. The main idea behind this theory is that if the income tax rates are reduced, it can have a positive impact on the growth of GDP and help to increase it. This indirectly means that the government can expect to earn more revenue since they can impose some amount of tax, even though a negligible one, on the extra or surplus growth. The fact that this policy is an integral part of Republican politics is proved by the fact that they have been advocating tax cuts for a long time now. Their views are quite strong about graduated tax rates and they do not flinch from expressing their disapproval and opposition against it. They are also not supportive of estate tax.

Another feature of Republican politics in the economic sphere is their insistence on a safety net in order to help the less fortunate. They are of the opinion that when it comes to making a positive difference in the lives of the poor, the private sector has an edge over the government. That is why they welcome the idea of providing the private charitable institutions with government grants so that the money can be put to good use. However, they are particular about the fact that this safety net policy should not be abused. Therefore, they stress utmost importance on eligibility limits so that only those who are needy and actually require aid can avail of this opportunity.

There is another area of contention for the Republican Party. The Republican politics is highly critical of the system of single-payer health care that is run by the government. They strongly feel that this kind of a practice favors employer-based or personal kind of insurance and also comprises socialized medicine. However, that does not imply that the Party is critical of all policies. There are a number of things that find the support of the Party. Some of them include portability of health insurance, a restriction on malpractice lawsuits, stress on preventive measures than emergency room care and execution of a more rationalized and smooth medical records in an electronic system. There is another area too that the Party endeavors to take care with the means of tax benefits and that is the uninsured lot. All this implies that there are quite a considerable amount of agendas that the Republican Party has up its sleeves.

Looking Back At the Republican Party

Republican PoliticsAmong the two most prominent political parties that exist in the United States, one is the Republican Party. The other, of course, is Democratic Party. Talking about Republican politics, the party was founded in as early as 1854. The founders of the said party were activists of anti-slavery expansion. The party is also called by the name of GOP or Grand Old Party. It is quite strange that the party is called so because if you make a comparison between the two above mentioned parties, it is the Democratic Party which is the older of the two. What is noteworthy about the party is that it emerged as a strong opposition to the prevailing Democratic Party within a short span of time. As far as the first party convention is concerned which was done in an official way, it was on the 6th of July of 1854. The place was Jackson in Michigan. The upper Midwest and the Northeast are the two main areas where the initial base of the Party was set up. This was basically the beginning of Republican politics.

What made the Party a resounding success was their popular slogan which was all about free labor, free men and free land. Now, this is one issue that was close to many people’s heart. Naturally, slavery was an abominable thing and you needed no one to tell you that. Everybody was aware of this prevailing malpractice and wanted to get it abolished. Therefore, when the party made a voice against it, it found a lot of followers instantly. The policy of free labor was all about freeing laborers from the bondage of slavery and talked about the independence of artisans. Again, free land talked about the unjust practice of wealthy landowners buying up most of the land and then using farmers as bonded laborers to work in them. The Party wanted to bring an end to slavery by all counts and took effective steps in that direction.

As the Party scaled new heights of success, there was factionalism within the party. This is perhaps an inevitable truth of politics. These kinds of things keep happening in this field and Republican politics was no different. There was a section which felt large-scale corruption was being promoted and that was the main reason behind the accomplishment of Reconstruction. They rooted for Horace Greeley as the candidate for presidency. However, people who were supporters of Ulysses S. Grant were not ready to accept such accusations and continued to defend their leader. It can be said that the party moved through such struggles from time to time. If you study the history of Republican politics, you will get to know about all this more elaborately. It is indeed interesting to know about the history of such a party in great detail.

Different Facets of Republican Politics

Global WarmingThere are different facets of any political party. It has to be so otherwise it cannot exist in this competitive field of politics. When you look at the Republican Party, the same thing comes to mind. Republican politics is about a lot of things one of which is their environmental policies. The issue of environment is quite topical now given the growing concerns about global warming. In such a scenario, it is a given that any political party worth its salt would be interested in it and would do its bit to further the cause. They have something different to say about the issue of global warming. They do not agree with the view that certain human activities as those stressed by different scientific studies are responsible for climate change. On the contrary, they are of the opinion that it is actually a natural cyclical occurrence and there are other alternative reasons for its cause. In this connection, John McCain comes to mind. For those who are not acquainted with him, he was the nominee for the post of president from the Republican Party in 2008. He was very vocal about the need to have some amount of regulation or restriction on the discharge or emanation of greenhouse gases into this atmosphere. Thus climate environmental concerns can be said to be a chief part of Republican politics.

The Party might have ideological differences with the opposition but they all are undivided in their opinion that Federal investment has to be increased in order to develop clean alternative fuels, increase nuclear energy and fuels like ethanol. Republican politics endeavor to encompass all these policies in the area of environment. McCain was very supportive of the cap-and-trade policy that did not found much favor with other Republicans. There is, however, one thing that drew some amount of criticism from certain sections of activists and that was supporting augmented oil drilling in protected areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Republican politics is also a lot about social policies. Every party is bound to have a religious wing that looks after the religious matters. There are a number of people in the Party who support the system of voluntary organized praying in public schools. Along with that, they are also enthusiastic about adopting intelligent design of teaching in science classes. They are critical of elective abortion and for that reason also resist the practice of federal funding for the embryonic stem cell research. This is because it is some way involved with the process of destroying human embryos which they do not support on any counts. Thus, the Party tries to include within its purview almost all the important aspects that can play an important role in the development of the nation and its advancement.
